Abstract

Biography
Julia Corbett is a Professor in the Department of Communication and Environmental Humanities. Her scholarship investigates environmental communication from a macro-sociological view of social conflict and cultural change, primarily now in the form of nonfiction essays and books about human relationships with the natural world. Of particular interest is the social organization of climate silence and alternative forms of engagement with climate change. She authored one of the first texts in environmental communication, Communicating Nature: How We Create and Understand Environmental Messages (2006, Island Press). Her second book, Seven Summers: A Naturalist Homesteads in the Modern West, “enacts the insights of feminist nature criticism” in a memoir about a small cabin in a wild place in a 21st-century landscape under acute pressure (2013, University of Utah Press). Her environmental nonfiction essays have been published in venues such as Orion, High Country News, and OnEarth magazine. She is finishing a third book, A Regular Day for the Moon: Culture and Everyday Nature and will soon begin a fourth about communicating climate change. Before receiving her M.A. and Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota in 1994, she was a reporter, a park ranger, a naturalist, a natural resources information officer, and a press secretary.



Dr. Sean Perera

Abstract

Biography
Dr Sean Perera is currently a Sessional Academic at the ANU Centre for the Public Awareness of Science (CPAS-ANU), where he has held several positions including Research Fellow, Lecturer, and International Programs Convener since 2007.
His research explores how science is communicated with culturally and linguistically diverse audiences. He is an internationally recognised expert in cross-cultural science communication, and convenes the course Cross-cultural Perspectives in Science Communication (SCOM3029 / SCOM6029) at CPAS-ANU.
Sean earned his PhD in science communication from ANU in 2010. He has a First Class, Tri-major Bachelor’s Degree in microbiology, chemistry and zoology from Bangalore University, India, and a Master’s Degree in agriculture from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. His significant achievements are listed below:

  • Colleges of Science Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning (2015)
  • Fellow of the Higher Education Academy UK (since 2015)
  • ANU Vice-Chancellor’s Team Award for Public Policy and Outreach (2015)
  • Leader of Opening Doors Project – engaging disadvantaged, young immigrants with Australian science (since 2012)
  • Co-author of Federal Government commissioned Inspiring Australia Developing Evidence Base for Science Engagement Report (2012)
  • Edward Gray Memorial Prize – Australia Sri Lanka Council for promoting bi-lateral relations through science communication (2007)
  • Total grant funding exceeding A$150,000 for science communication research and outreach, procured from funding bodies in Australia and internationally.

RACHEL LOWRY  (BSc and BEd).

Rachel is an innovative leader in science communication with experience in developing and delivering social marketing campaigns that influence pro-wildlife behaviour change.

Rachel is the Director of Wildlife Conservation and Science at Zoos Victoria and Past-President of International Zoo Educators Association. Rachel leads a team at Zoos Victoria that oversees the organizations wildlife captive breeding and recovery projects, eco-socio projects, environmental sustainability, collection planning, research, education, community conservation and animal welfare. Rachel is also advisor to Australia’s Threatened Species Commissioner, and former Chair of the Centre for Sustainability leadership. She has developed award winning programs that have tackled conservation and sustainability issues both locally and globally, with the Don’t Palm us Off campaign being one that has helped raise the profile of what zoos can achieve through community conservation campaigns. In 2010 Rachel was awarded Sustainability Leader of the year by WME within the Government and NGO sector. In 2011 she was profiled in Melbourne’s Top 100 most influential people through The Age newspaper. In 2012, Rachel led a team whose sustainability initiatives secured Zoos Vitoria the title of the world’s first carbon neutral zoo. In 2016, the Australian Geographic Magazine listed Rachel as Australia’s Top 30 conservation heroes. Rachel is currently working to raise the profile of Victoria’s most threatened terrestrial vertebrates, and is currently leading a conservation campaign designed to reduce the threats to wildlife posed by the outdoor use of balloons and their associated plastics.

Biography
Passionate about working with people to secure a sustainable future for all, Lian leads a team of conservation specialists and works with communities to foster emotional connections, create advocates for wildlife, and facilitate pro-conservation behaviours, delivered through award winning community conservation campaigns and education programs. Lian is committed to developing young people, through programs like Youth at the Zoo and Education for Conservation, ensuring our future has leaders that champion wildlife conservation.

Lead a team of social science, conservation and education specialists to develop and activate initiatives through the community that reduce human driven threats to wildlife and build a wildlife friendly community. Key achievements:

  • Development of a Community Conservation Toolkit, underpinned by Zoos Victoria’s Connect-Understand-Act model, and staff training program to build capabilities to foster key attitudes, values, influence beliefs and facilitate pro wildlife behaviours.
  • Manage the development and design of community conservation campaigns and initiatives, including Education for Conservation program, ensuring best practice social science
  • Manage the implementation of the Community Conservation Masterplan 2015-2020 to deliver on Zoos Victoria’s goal to be a world leading zoo based conservation organisation and fight extinction.
  • Development of the Community Conservation Research Plan that identifies and prioritises social science research needs, and ensures social and biological sciences are integrated where necessary to maximise conservation impact
  • Secured significant funding from the State Government to provide access for 40,000 regional and disadvantaged students to our Fighting Extinction Schools program that engages schools in working with us to save endangered wildlife.
